I first met Colin over twenty years ago when I attended a Management Development Training course which my employer had asked Colin to develop. Colin had an enthusiasm for teaching which I had not encountered before, and I soon became hooked, starting a journey of learning and education that has lasted over 20 years, culminating in me obtaining a BSC (hons) in Health Safety and Environment Management in 2011.
Since that first meeting, Colin and I have worked on many projects, both in the development and delivery of training and in my capacity as a governor of North Lindsey College.
Sport was once my driving passion, but as the years have gone by and the injuries mounted up, my interests have become much more sedate. I now watch the rugby on TV, drive my old Jaguar and spend more money than I tell my wife, on collecting studio pottery.
I have worked in the steel industry, both directly employed by British Steel as it was then, and for some of the largest contracting companies in the steel industry.
I moved from management into training and then Health and Safety, adding Environmental as the legislation and the emphasis changed within industry.
As a UK Health Safety and Environment manager and then a European HSE manager I have worked and travelled extensively all over the UK and Europe, implementing Health Safety and Environmental Management systems from basic risk assessment, to full OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 compliant systems.
Over the years, I have unfortunately seen the impact that a bad injury or fatal accident can have. Everybody involved from the injured person and his family, to work colleagues and the company involved, all feel the impact and the repercussions. This has given me a passion to find working practices and systems that are both practical in their implementation, and reduce the risk to manageable levels.
When I was made redundant after 30 years of working in the high risk sector of heavy industry, I took the opportunity to form my own company, (NPS Health Safety & Environment Ltd) working as a Health Safety and Environmental consultant; offering a quality tailored service to meet the individual requirements of the client, not an off the shelf one size fits all approach, that seems to be prevalent with some consultants.
I have gained considerable experience of many aspects of HSE management and can offer a complete service covering areas such as: 14001, 18001 and 9000 COMAH, COSHH, Confined Space
Permit to work, Risk Assessment and Emergency Planning
Safety Training and Incident Investigation
I have travelled and worked extensively, throughout Europe and the UK so would be willing to work anywhere in the UK, or abroad, if required.
