Barry Shippey

I am at present working as a Training Consultant for Nicholas Associates. I deliver training workshops and assess Business Improvement Techniques; I have been with Nicholas associates for just over a year.

Duties/Experience

• Delivering training workshops for Business Improvement Techniques
• Assessment of level 2 & 3 NVQ/QCF and Apprenticeships in BIT
• Developing power points to meet training needs
• Incorporating 5s audits into the training to help develop companies staff
• Building effective working relationships at all levels
• Using problem solving tools: Ishikawa, (fishbone) 5 Whys and Brainstorming.
• Utilising my skills and industrial experience to assist companies in driving down waste and setting achievable quantifiable targets

My work this year has taken me to Youngs Seafood’s in Grimsby where recently I helped thirty people achieve a L2 NVQ and through this potentially save the company £352,217.66 with only an estimated £50,000 outlay.
Not all of the savings came from management as I pride myself on being able to communicate at all levels; this includes shop floor staff, after all they are the experts on their lines, machines or processes, so why not involve them?
Friendly banter is encouraged within training sessions. I actually sometimes call myself “daft Barry” in root cause analysis sessions to encourage what seems like daft questions from the group, it often leads to someone being prompted to participate who would normally sit quietly when they have a “goldmine” of ideas.
I am also training candidates at Princes foods Bradford in line with the new 15 million IPC systems and warehousing and working directly on projects with site management and staff aiming to save £500,000 over an eighteen month period.
My previous training and assessing work came through North Lindsey College 2008-20012. This is where I was lucky enough to be able to pick up many qualifications and close the gap between my vast manufacturing and process experience and being able to pass on my knowledge through teaching/training:

MFI Manufacturing 1991-2006 (Technical machine operator) and Capper Pass & Sons smelting1987-1991 (Process, refining and blast furnace work.) Richard Dunston Shipbuilders 1979-1987 ( Platers shop & Staging Rigger)
